The screening and post-screening talk of Dream Home (International Version) at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) was a resounding success, drawing a full house on 22nd January 2026 at the Rayson Huang Theatre. The event was co-organized by the HKU Department of Comparative Literature, the Master of Arts in Literary and Cultural Studies (MALCS), the Center for the Study of Globalization and Cultures (CSGC), and MOViE MOViE, with valued support from 852 Films. The event garnered significant engagement from HKU students, staff, alumni, and the public, highlighting a notable interest in Hong Kong cinema and the horror genre.

Dream Home, a 2010 slasher film directed by Pang Ho-cheung, satirizes Hong Kong’s property frenzy. Cheng Li-sheung (Josie Ho) resorts to desperate measures amid soaring property prices in 2007, infiltrating the flat for a bloody massacre to devalue units. Marking the 15th anniversary of the release of Dream Home, the screening of its international version enables audiences to experience the awe and shock evoked by the film once more within an academic setting.

The post-screening talk featured the leading actress/producer of the film, Ms. Josie Ho, alongside producer Mr. Conroy Chan, moderated by Dr. Derek Lam from the Department of Comparative Literature. The discussions covered film production, acting, housing pressures, urban stress, class dynamics, and representations of cityscapes, prompting reflections on cinema’s societal role. The Q&A session drew an enthusiastic response from the floor, offering attendees a rare opportunity to interact directly with the cast and share their perspectives on the viewing experience.

The HKU co-organizers would like to extend sincere gratitude to all event partners and attendees for contributing to the screening and post-screening talk of Dream Home (international version), making it a full-house success. The Department of Comparative Literature and MALCS will continue to host another screening and post-screening talk in February 2026. These screening events aim to foster closer connections among professionals in the creative industries, scholars, and students, thereby reinforcing the department and the programme’s commitment to promoting local filmmaking and intercultural arts exchange.
