Held at the heritage-rich Whitty Street Tram Depot in Shek Tong Tsui, the event was attended by Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU, alongside with Mrs. Cherry Tse, Executive Vice-President (Administration & Finance), Professor Jay Siegel, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning), and Professor Kelvin Yeung, Dean of Student Affairs, engaging in meaningful dialogue with students against the nostalgic backdrop of Hong Kong's iconic tramway. Professor Zhang paralleled the University's legacy with the tram's century-old role in uniting communities, reinforcing the anniversary theme, "Reaching Out, Rising Higher". “This historic tram mirrors our University in many ways: a Hong Kong icon that connects different parts of the community, offering a moving perspective of our vibrant city,” Professor Zhang said. “With 115 years of legacy, HKU will continue our proud traditions in supporting our community, connecting with our citizens, and cultivating the next generation of global thought-leaders with commitment to Hong Kong, our nation and the World.” In celebration of its 115th anniversary, HKU hosted "HKU Tram Connect"—a student engagement initiative. The event also paid tribute to a recent student-led gratitude campaign recognising the contributions of campus support staff and community workers—from custodians and librarians to transport workers. Student ambassadors who led this gratitude campaign – presenting floral tributes and notes of appreciation – were specially invited to participate, exemplifying HKU's culture of mutual respect. It truly embodied the spirit of ‘Reaching Out,’” said Ethan Leung Pak Hei, a Bachelor of Arts student. “As an international student, this event made me feel deeply connected to the HKU family and the city. The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has set a new record with 54 academics named in Clarivate’s “Highly Cited Researchers 2025” list. This achievement places HKU 13th globally among all institutions, based on the total number of researcher designations—including those recognised across multiple fields.

Hong Kong maintains its position as 8th among countries and regions worldwide. HKU plays a pivotal role in this success, with 38% of Hong Kong’s Highly Cited Researchers affiliated with the University—the highest representation among local higher education institutions.

According to Clarivate Analytics, a total of 6,868 scholars from 60 countries and regions worldwide have been named Highly Cited Researchers in 2025. Highly Cited Researchers are selected for their exceptional research performance, determined by production of multiple highly cited papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for their fields and publication year in Web of Science over the past decade.
