The Hsu Ti-shan Centenary Centre for Humanities

Named after the foundational HKU humanist Hsu Ti-shan (1893-1941), the Centre aims to articulate Humanities knowledge that addresses fundamental concerns of humankind in ways that prevalent scientific and technological knowledge cannot. Focusing on the basics of what it means to be a living soul, aiming to build bridges between different disciplines and across cultures, the Centre foregrounds local systems of knowledge that have been developed in the Sinosphere. Prominent themes include: Ecology and the Sacred; Human Flourishing; Knowledge and Responsibility; and Humane Technology. The Centre’s activities are structured around a series of lectures, workshops and seminars where HKU faculty and distinguished international scholars engage in critical debates on consequential topics.
