The Faculty of Arts is celebrating its 100 Year Anniversary with an exhibition that unites the past and the future in a thought-provoking work by digital artists OpenEndedGroup. Founded in 1912, Arts provided a home for a number of departments which are now located in other faculties, including science, education, and social studies. This digital installation invites us to think anew about the interconnectedness of these disciplines by creating a work that references literature, music, cinema, philosophy, and the history of science. It also challenges us to explore the new spaces of the Centennial Campus and reflect on the tremendous benefits the arts and humanities bring to our lives and the places we interact in.

The Exhibition will feature two excerpts from the OpenEndedGroup’s work Upending, which takes the form of 3D cinema. Ordinary objects, spaces, and bodies are probed and queried from unfamiliar perspectives. The play of images is accompanied by a recording of Morton Feldman’s first String Quartet by the FLUX Quartet.

OpenEndedGroup is comprised of three digital artists – Marc Downie, Shelley Eshkar, and Paul Kaiser – whose pioneering approach to digital art frequently combines three signature elements: non-photorealistic 3D rendering; the incorporation of body movement by motion-capture and other means; and the autonomy of artworks directed or assisted by artificial intelligence.

The OpenEndedGroup installation is curated and designed by Dr Eric Schuldenfrei of the Faculty of Architecture. This event is held as part of the Faculty of Arts Centenary Celebrations and is generously supported by the HKU Culture & Humanities Fund.
