University Artist Trey Lee Performs at HKU in Musicus Heritage Community Concert

28 November 2014 (Friday)

Acclaimed cellist and University Artist Trey Lee performed at the University Museum and Art Gallery on November 28 as part of the Musicus Fest 2014 Heritage programme. Launched in 2013 by Musicus Society, of which Trey is Artistic Director, the Heritage programme takes festival artists to historically significant locations that provide a cultural context for the music.

Three short concerts by renowned international musicians were held at various times throughout the day in the Museum’s TT Tsui and Fung Ping Shan Buildings. In addition to Trey’s performance, the programme included the world premiere of a work by HKU PhD Candidate Mr Gordon Fung Dic-lun. HKU students were also involved in putting together the programme notes for the three performances as a result of their participation in the Musicus Inspires! education initiative launched by Musicus Society in partnership with UNICEF Hong Kong.

Speaking at the event, HKU Dean of Arts, Professor Douglas Kerr, stated: “We are very grateful to Musicus Society for involving our University in this year’s Musicus Fest 2014, as part of the heritage community concerts programme. This wonderful outreach programme is very much in line with the aims of the University Artists Scheme and we are proud to be included. “

The Musicus Fest 2014 also includes a Heritage community concert at the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre in Kowloon Park. All concerts are free and open to the public.

About the University Artists Scheme

The University Artists Scheme was officially launched in 2008 and is the first programme of its kind to be held at HKU. The Scheme brings artists of international caliber to our campus to enrich the lives of our students, staff, and the wider Hong Kong community. Six highly respected artists from the disciplines of Film, Music, Literature and the Visual Arts have been appointed as University Artists for 2014-2016. The University Artists Scheme is hosted by the Faculty of Arts and is supported by Dr Alice Lam.

About Musicus Heritage Community Concerts

Musicus Heritage brings some of the festival artists to various locales to create a unique interaction between music and history. This year, our heritage community concerts take place at the University Museum and Art Gallery of the University of Hong Kong and the Heritage Discovery Centre in Kowloon Park. Both sites played important roles in the development of Hong Kong, and their transformations are testament to the enduring vibrancy of the city and its people.

About Musicus Fest

Musicus Fest is a meeting point for artists from across the world to interact and inspire future generations. Apart from presenting enthralling concerts, its unique Musicus Heritage programme takes festival artists to our community - to various locales while putting the music in context with the cultural significance of the surroundings. Moreover, the launch of Musicus Inspires! in 2013 has brought to Hong Kong’s young musicians what their counterparts elsewhere have long enjoyed: a chance to elevate themselves to a higher level of artistic excellence through meaningful interaction with distinguished artists from different parts of the world. Supported by the Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF HK), Musicus Inspires! is an educational programme which strives to cultivate students of all social backgrounds. The programme includes ensemble and arts management training, master classes and school visits.
