Dr Chan Hing-yan Presented with Award for Best Artist (Music) at the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2013

Dr Chan Hing-yan, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Music, has been presented with the Award for Best Artist (Music) at the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2013 Presentation Ceremony held in the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on April 25, 2014. A total of 29 awards were presented to local artists and arts organizations during the ceremony, organised by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, in recognition of their support and contributions to arts development in Hong Kong.

Renowned for his subtle mediation between Chinese and Western idioms, Dr Chan has received commissions from local and overseas musicians, orchestras and music festivals. As a composer, he has represented Hong Kong on many international occasions and his works have been performed extensively around the world. His 2012-2013 calendar was dotted with a string of new releases, among them the chamber opera Heart of Coral, composed for the Hong Kong Arts Festival, ‘Twas the Thawing Wind, a work commissioned by the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and premiered in Hong Kong before touring five cities in North America, and As the Wind Goes By, a quintet written for the RTHK Quartet, who performed the work in Italy and repeated it in France.

The ceremony was attended by The Hon CY Leung, Chief Executive of the HKSAR, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, Secretary for Home Affairs, Dr Wilfred Wong Ying-wai, Chairman of the Arts Development Council and Vice-chairman Ms Lina Yan Hay-yee.

The award presentation ceremony will be broadcast at 9 pm on June 7 via RTHK TV31.
