In Memory of Mr Alexander Law

In memory of Mr Alexander Law

It is with deepest sadness that members of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Hong Kong mourn for the passing of Mr Alexander Law (BA 1976, Honorary University Fellow 2010).  Our sincerest condolences to his family.

Mr Law graduated from HKU with a BA in Chinese and English Studies & Comparative Literature in 1976 and he was always closely connected with the University and Faculty of Arts.

Mr Law has built a reputation as a talented writer, film director and producer whose impressive career has seen him reach the highest echelons of the Hong Kong film industry. Mr Law has received global recognition for his work at, inter alia, the Hong Kong Film Awards, the Golden Horse Awards, Chicago International Film Festival, the Asia-Pacific Film Festival.  He won the Crystal Bear for Best Film at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival for the film Echoes of the Rainbow, which also garnered him the Best Screenplay Award at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

Over the course of his career, Mr Law has worked on many films with fellow alumna, Ms Mabel Cheung, a creative partnership that has led to numerous awards and honours.

Their movies’ Gala Premieres were presented for fundraising of HKU − including The Soong Sisters in 1997 and City of Glass in 1998, and for the 25th Anniversary of the Class of ’75 Beijing Rocks in 2001, A Tale of Three Cities in 2015.

Mr Law has for many years shared his experience and insights with our students as an HKU Mentor and University Artist.  As one of our most distinguished Arts alumni, he was the Guest of Honour of the 198th Congregation of the Faculty of Arts who shared his inspiring speech to encourage young people in the arts.

In 2010, HKU presented the Honorary University Fellowship to Mr Law in recognition of his contributions to Hong Kong and academia.

Mr Law’s generous contributions to the Faculty, the University and Hong Kong will always be remembered and he will be truly missed.
