HKU Scholars win the Global Silver Award for the Sustainability Education Literacy in QS Reimagine Education Awards 2024

An innovative teaching and learning project led by Dr. Tim Yung of the Faculty of Arts with Dr. Mei Li Khong of the LKS Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and educators from Tecnológico de Monterrey, International Islamic University Malaysia and Srinakharinwirot University won the Global Silver award for the Sustainability Education Literacy at the 2024 QS Reimagine Education Awards.

The winning project is titled “Cross-Cultural Classroom (3C): Empowering Future Leaders with Sustainable Citizenship”. This collaboration between educators from the four universities equipped students from different disciplines (Arts and Humanities, Engineering, Medicine) to build local sustainability solutions on a global scale by accounting for cross-cultural contexts.

Often referred to as the "Oscars of Education," the awards are designed to honour the most innovative and effective approaches to enhancing student learning experiences and employability outcomes.  The awards honour pioneering pedagogical approaches that boost learning outcomes and employability, as well as effective methods of teaching sustainability, with a vision to equip over a billion learners worldwide for their future endeavours.

Attracting over 1300 innovative submissions across 18 award categories, this year's awards stand out not only for its record-breaking number of entries but also for their quality and diversity. The submissions were meticulously evaluated by a panel of 1300+ international judges, and a Grand Jury consisting of 50 global experts, showcasing the global appeal and prestige of the Reimagine Education Awards.

Dr Yung and Dr Khong said, “This year’s student projects impressively considered all four cultural contexts – compact portable water filters, cross-disciplinary health apps, compatible driving app. Enabling students to think about sustainability beyond their degree discipline while empathizing with other cultural contexts is essential for higher education – both students AND educators!”

Further ahead, the HKU Team will be co-teaching micro-credential Common Core course ‘Transdisciplinary Healthcare Solutions’ at HKU this summer using the same primary concepts from Cross-Cultural Classroom.
