HKU Black Box to Present Innovative Performance of Humperdinck’s Hansel & Gretel

The HKU Black Box will feature five unique performances of Hansel & Gretel on February 24 and 25, and March 3 and 4, 2017. In an hour-long showcase of opera songs that integrate puppetry and storytelling, this HKU Black Box original production draws from tremendous Hong Kong talent. Rising stars in musical direction and opera, young designers from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and HKU students join together for a modern version of a classic tale.

Hansel and Gretel are urban castaways. Their father struggles with responsibility and their mother appears unnecessarily critical. The Mother's flipside, the Witch, will attempt to seduce and consume. Sent into the city too soon, Hansel and Gretel embark on a voyage of self-discovery that reveals as much about taking a chance as it does about finding their way home.

The songs from Hansel & Gretel will be sung in the original German, with English text and visual collage inspired by the beautiful medieval manuscript called a Book of Hours. This HKU Black Box production is directed by Jessica Ng and Page Richards, with Musical Direction by Ming Kwong.

February 24, March 3, March 4: 7:30 pm
February 25, March 4: 2:30 pm
Venue: HKU Black Box, L/G Floor, Centennial Campus, HKU (MTR Exit C1)
