HKU Arts and Humanities rises to 13th in the QS University
Subject Rankings 2017

HKU’s overall ranking in the Arts & Humanities has jumped from 19th in 2016 to 13th in the latest QS University Subject Rankings released on March 8, 2017. While university rankings and league tables vary widely because they each employ different criteria and methodologies, the Faculty of Arts’ presence amongst the best institutions in the world in these subjects is evidence of its exceptional record in teaching and research.

"We are delighted that our efforts to build the strongest research and teaching Faculty in the Arts and Humanities in Asia are being recognized. Our strength in Asia will increasingly capture the world's attention," said Professor Derek Collins, Dean of Arts, speaking upon the release of the 2017 subject rankings.

In addition to 13th in the overall rankings for the Arts and Humanities, HKU made the global top 20 in two subjects: Linguistics and Modern Languages. Linguistics was ranked 10th in this annual survey of the top universities worldwide, the third consecutive year that it has been in the global top 10. Modern Languages was ranked 13th, up from 15th in 2016. English Language & Literature, was ranked 27th.

The Faculty has several new initiatives underway aimed at further strengthening its position as one of the world’s foremost universities, including the establishment of the Society of Fellows in the Humanities, an innovative scheme that invests in outstanding, early-career researchers. The Faculty, in collaboration with the University Museum and Art Gallery, was recently awarded HKD1.1 million by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to expand programmes in museum and conservation studies.

Published annually since 2011, the rankings are based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact. For further information, please visit: https://www.topuniversities.com/subject-rankings/2017.
