Hong Kong filmmaker and University Artist Fruit Chan shared over the topic of the Future of Independent Film in Hong Kong with us on the evening of April 13. Screening of one of his most critically-acclaimed films Made in Hong Kong (1997) was done before the dialogue. A true independent film, shot on a shoestring budget using non-professional actors, Made in Hong Kong won Best Picture and Best Director honors at the 17th Hong Kong Film Awards. A commentary on youth and urban alienation in the run up to the Hong Kong Handover, the film raises many issues that are still pertinent 20 years later.
