English Enhancement Courses

Application Deadline: March 31, 2017

Credit bearing courses with the ARTS prefix are for exchange and visiting students only, while HIST2093 and HIST2107, courses with the GCIN prefix and the Chinese as a Foreign Language courses CHIN9501, CHIN9511 and CHIN9521 are for all undergraduate students, including eligible HKU students. Fee exemption/reduction applies for HKU students and students under formal HKU exchange agreements. 

Please, note that no add/drop will be permitted after the commencement of the summer courses.

ARTS1002 Academic English Proficiency: Engaging with Visual Art (6 credits)

This course will help students enhance their written and spoken academic English and visual art appreciation in a creative, visually-rich, and unique way. This will be done by describing, analyzing and discussing visual art (e.g. paintings, sculpture, and prints). Students will visit an art gallery with the course lecturer and will also visit art venues of their own choosing as part of the learning hours.

ARTS1008 ARTS1008 English Discussion Skills: Critical Discussions on China  (6 credits)

This is an advanced speaking skills course that aims to improve students’ ability to discuss critical issues in English. Students are exposed to a range of views on specific issues in Chinese culture and society, and are required to discuss these issues with others. The course uses a number of scholarly readings on China as starting points for discussions, and students are required to do some reading to prepare for lessons. Students will receive focused advice on how to improve their speaking skills.

ARTS1010 English for Effective Communication in Business and Social Contexts (6 credits)

This course aims to develop students’ business and social communication skills. Areas covered include negotiation and telephoning skills and writing business correspondence such as email, business letters and investigative reports; as well as oral and presentation skills in both informal and formal social contexts such as meeting new friends and interacting at social gatherings. Students will be given extensive opportunities to practice and apply the skills through a variety of speaking tasks and an end-of-course social function.

ARTS1011 Linguistics: The Understanding of Language (6 credits)

In this course students will be able to gain a solid understanding of language and its many facets. The focus will be on language as a human tool of communication as well as how we use it in its many forms. We are all experts in our own language, and being based in Asia we are also very likely to speak more than one language. But how do we know our own language so well? Why is a second language so difficult to master? How is language used in our everyday lives? These questions and many more will be answered in this challenging yet stimulating course.

ARTS1013 Academic Writing and Critical Reading (6 credits)

This is an advanced academic writing skills course that aims to enhance students’ writing abilities in academic contexts. Students are exposed to a number of scholarly texts on selected topics, and analyze these texts through critical reading and discussions in class. Students are then required to respond to these readings to write well-structured and stylistically appropriate academic papers. Students will receive focused advice and constructive feedback from both their peers and teachers on how to improve their writing skills.
