Department of Linguistics holds its First Summer Institute for Linguistic Research

The HKU Department of Linguistics will be holding its first Summer Institute for Linguistic Research from July 7 to 18, 2014 under the theme of “Linguistic Diversity in Asia: Theories and Methods”.

During the first week of the Institute, senior undergraduate and postgraduate participants can choose from a selection of seminar series taught by members of the Department of Linguistics as well as a guest lecturer from the Australian National University. A total of five seminar series are on offer, with topics ranging from emergent phonology to the brain mechanisms of language and the history of language in the Pacific world.

The second week of the Institute features an intensive workshop on language documentation led by Visiting Professor Peter Austin of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Mr David Nathan of the University of Oxford, and Professors Honore Watanabe and Toshihide Nakayama, both of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. The workshop will have a special focus on multilingualism and will include lectures covering key principles and state of the art methods, hands-on training with equipment and software as well as practical sessions and fieldwork exercises.

There will be a half-day poster conference held as part of the Institute on Saturday, July 12, during which postgraduate students will have the opportunity to present their latest research for discussion and feedback.
