Chinese as a Foreign Language - Mandarin & Cantonese

CHIN9501 / CHIN9511 / CHIN9521: application deadline is March 31, 2017.

Credit bearing courses with the ARTS prefix are for exchange and visiting students only, while HIST2093 and HIST2107, courses with the GCIN prefix and the Chinese as a Foreign Language courses CHIN9501, CHIN9511 and CHIN9521 are for all undergraduate students, including eligible HKU students. Fee exemption applies for HKU students and students under formal HKU exchange agreements.

Please, note that no add/drop will be permitted after the commencement of the summer courses.

CHIN9501 Chinese as a Foreign Language I  (6 credits)

Chinese Language as a Foreign Language I is an intensive course which is intended for foreign learners who have NO prior knowledge of the Chinese language.  It aims to build a solid foundation for students wishing to go on to more advanced levels of language study and in-depth study of Chinese culture and society.  It familiarizes students with the phonetic structures of Putonghua, the Hanyu Pinyin system, pronunciation, tones, intonation, sentence patterns and the characteristics of situational conversations. Up to 200 most frequently used simplied Chinese characters will be introduced.

Reading Materials: 《新实用汉语》第一册,第一课至第八课 (包括练习册)New Practical Chinese, Book I from Chapter One to Eight (including workbooks) or equivalent, and other printed materials.

Eligibility: Undergraduate students from HKU and overseas universities

Period of Teaching: Session A: June 26  July 21, 2017 (four weeks); Mon to Fri, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

CHIN9511 Cantonese as a Foreign Language I (6 credits)

This course is intended for foreign learners who have no prior knowledge of Cantonese (Mandarin speakers may apply). The course introduces the fundamental structure of the language that can immediately be put to use in daily life. It aims to develop oral communication skills through a variety of situational conversations to make life in Hong Kong easier and more enjoyable.

Eligibility: Undergraduate students from HKU and overseas universities

Period of Teaching: Session A: June 26  July 21, 2017 (four weeks); Mon to Fri, 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

chinese characters
CHIN9521 The Fundamentals of Chinese Characters (6 credits)

This course is intended for students who are complete beginners in written Chinese – no prior
knowledge of the Chinese language is necessary (but learners of both spoken Mandarin and
Cantonese are welcome). Chinese characters will be introduced with particular emphasis on the formation and the structure such that students can acquire the skills of decoding the mysteries of them and composing any characters without difficulty. The origins and evolutions of Chinese characters will also be introduced in order to cultivate a deeper understanding on the characters and Chinese culture.

Eligibility: Undergraduate students from HKU and overseas universities

Period of Teaching: Session B: July 17 – August 4, 2017 (three weeks); Mon to Fri, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. & 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
