Course Selections:

Initial Course Selection Period: August 23, 2017 (10:00 a.m.) to August 28, 2017 (4:00 p.m.)

     Suspension period: August 25, 2017 (9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.)

Notes of Guidance on Course Selection for Incoming Exchange/ Visiting Students:

Course Selection Procedures and Timetable:

Study Load: NO minimum or maximum study load requirement per semester/ academic year is required for exchange/ visiting students. The normal study load for regular HKU Bachelor of Arts students is 30 credits per semester.

Course Distribution Requirement: At least 50% of the total number of credits taken must be in Arts courses (i.e. courses offered by the following Schools/ Centre: Chinese, English, Humanities, Modern Languages and Cultures and Buddhist Studies).

Courses NOT Offered to Exchange/ Visiting Students:

  1. Chinese language enhancement courses (
  2. English language enhancement courses (
  3. Any other courses at the discretion of the course offering units

Add/ Drop Periods:

First Semester:

August 31, 2017 (10:00 a.m.) to September 13, 2017 (4:00 p.m.)

   Suspension period:

September 1, 2017 (12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m.)

Second Semester:

January 15, 2018 (10:00 a.m.) to January 29, 2018 (4:00 p.m.)

   Suspension period:

January 16, 2018 (12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m.)

Special Course


CHIN95xx Courses Offered to International Students:

Enrollment procedures

  1. First register for CHIN95xx courses on SIS;
  2. Submit a completed statement of current level of proficiency in the Chinese language in the first lesson (website:; and
  3. If the courses require a pre-requisite/ prior knowledge in the Chinese language, students are required to take a placement test in the first lesson.

Common Core Courses Offered to Exchange/ Visiting Students:

Enrollment procedures

Subject to availability, exchange/ visiting students may take up to two Common Core courses from a selective menu, each from a different Area of Inquiry. They should enroll to special sub-classes (i.e. with the alphabet "X") created for exchange/ visiting students only.

  1. Course approval method during the initial course selection period: first-come-first-served; and
  2. Course approval method during the add/ drop periods: auto-ballot
