Guidelines on Statement of Purpose

As part of your application for the Faculty of Arts Exchange Programme (FAEP), you should provide a "Statement of Purpose". This short essay will be useful for assessment of your motivation and study objectives, and also your command of English in the selection process. You are suggested to follow the below guidelines to submit a piece of writing that will award you an exchange place and/or scholarship.

Guidelines

● Write approximately 1,000 words in length and observe the word count.

● Tell us the following:

  • why do you want to study at your preferred host institution(s)?
  • how will the host institution(s) help you achieve your study goals?
  • how will the knowledge and experience gained there influence your plans for the future?
  • what extra-curricular activities have you been involved?
  • List out the top 5 preferred host institutions of both FAEP and HKUWW if you applied for both exchange programmes.
    (e.g. 1st: FAEP- Kent (FY) > 2nd: HKUWW – Melbourne U(S2) > ….5th : HKUWW – Salzburg U(S1))

● Here are some tips for writing the Statement of Purpose:

  • Show your enthusiasm.
  • Adopt a confident tone and reflect on some of your significant achievements.
  • Be realistic regarding your choices of host institutions, plans and study goals.
  • Demonstrate your Statement of Purpose in good English, free from typos and grammatical mistakes.
  • Discuss your application and choice of host institutions with your teachers, but write your own Statement of Purpose.
  • Write, revise and finetune your Statement of Purpose making it the best to represent yourself because this piece of writing will be reviewed by the selection committee. Together with your GPA, your Statement of Purpose will affect whether you will be chosen for the programme or not. So, you are reminded to invest sufficient time and thought, and avoid writing it at the last minute before the deadline.
  • You are also suggested to research whether individual host institution provides some specific guidance on how to write a Statement of Purpose. You may find this information on the host institution’s website under web rubrics such as "International Students" or "Exchange Students".

Finally, happy writing on a good and an effective Statement of Purpose!
